The town has 11,000 inhabitants and is situated to the west of St. Louis on the Missouri river. The town is particularly proud of the many German settlers in the town’s ancestry who once shaped its cultural and economic life. The town produces a broad assortment of industrial goods that safeguards its economic strength, ranging from milking machines and packaging material to transformers, lingerie, truck chassis and corn cob pipes. Washington is the main shopping destination for a catchment area that includes 75,000 inhabitants. With more than 300 individual retail stores, it is the largest shopping location between St. Louis and Jefferson City.
